Celebrating Older Americans Month

In celebration of Older Americans Month, health care communities across DC gathered for the 5th Annual Walk and Roll event on May 1st. Each year we come together to honor older adults across the city and celebrate the resilience and strength of those who live and work in senior living. Participants this year included walkers, cyclists, runners and decorated vehicles who made their way from the starting line at The Fillmore School at 1801 35th Street NW to the finish line at Forest Hills of DC by Goodwin Living.

Since 2023, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser and the DC City Council annually proclaim May as Old People Are Cool month. This year, Councilmember Matt Frumin presented the Council’s Ceremonial Resolution to Forest Hills of DC by Goodwin Living President Tina Sandri at the starting line of the Walk and Roll event, in honor of Old People Are Cool month. The Council member also launched a website to provide residents of Ward 3 with information about existing senior services and neighborhood organizations working directly with older adults, which can be found here: https://mattfruminward3.com/resources-for-older-residents/

This year’s Walk and Roll event was the largest held and included participants from: Cleveland and Woodley Park Village, the DC Department of Aging and Community Living, Grand Oaks, Georgetown Village, Inspir Embassy Row, Knollwood Military Retirement Community, LeadingAge, LeadingAge DC, Lisner Louise Dickson Hurt Home, Northwest Neighbors Village, Serenity Rehabilitation and Health Center, Sunday Health, Sunrise on Connecticut Avenue, United Church Homes, Volunteers of America, and the Walk to End Alzheimer’s National Capital Chapter.

Sponsorship of the event was generously provided by AccentCare Hospice, Capital Caring Health, and Care with Love.

Older Americans Month is celebrated each May, with the theme this year set as “Flip the Script on Aging.” https://acl.gov/oam/2025/older-americans-month-2025
